How We Choose

Gate 1: It has to be a real, currently sold product

Before anything else, we confirm a product actually exists as a real, current listing with genuine manufacturer specifications, not a discontinued item or a placeholder listing. We pull real details like item form, flavor, ingredients, and life stage directly from that product's own label and specification data. Products that fail this basic check never make it onto Petof.

Gate 2: Verified buyer demand

A product also has to show real, verified demand from actual buyers, reflected in review counts and recent purchase activity, not just a manufacturer's marketing claims. We look for products that dog owners are actually buying and reviewing, not obscure listings with little to no track record. This step filters out products that look fine on paper but have no real audience behind them.

Gate 3: A rating of 3.8 or higher

Every product that reaches our rankings must carry an average buyer rating of at least 3.8 out of 5. We treat this as a baseline for genuine satisfaction, not a guarantee of perfection, since even well reviewed products will not work for every dog. Products below this threshold are left off the site regardless of how popular or well known the brand is.

Gate 4: A real, traceable brand, then we rank what's left

We check that the company behind a product is a real, identifiable brand rather than an anonymous storefront with no traceable history. Once a product clears all four gates, we rank it against others in its category using ingredients, form, flavor, life stage fit, price, and buyer rating and demand together. This is how we arrive at the best picks and comparisons you see across Petof's food and supplement guides. Prices and specific details can change after publishing, so we encourage checking the current listing before you buy.
